Homelessness

One keystone underlying issue of homelessness, is the lack of housing that is affordable. We need to work with community and government partners to create accessible options for individuals to find housing. The cost for supporting individuals in shelter far outweigh the cost of supporting individuals in their home, so efforts must be taken to increase supports to those at risk of becoming homeless and for those exiting homelessness. Housing first.

  • Create more models of housing (housing with support, affordable private housing, alternative models of shared housing) and ensure social support to assist with the move from homelessness to housing and employment
  • Work to bring RentSafe program to the city, with Rent grant for those facing eviction
  • Lower barriers to shelters
    • Ensure training opportunities are available for those working in the field to increase competency and help prevent worker burnout
  • Work with individual agencies to help standardize shelter and homelessness services to lower barriers and increase access to individuals who require service
    • Ensuring accessible resources based on gender, racial, physical and mental health needs
  • Identify appropriate buildings to convert to transitional housing and/or supportive housing
  • Prioritize the creation of rent geared to income units
  • Create programs to raise public awareness on issues and reasons why homelessness exists
    • Promote ideas that steer people away from blaming individuals about homelessness and understanding systemic issues
