A note from the Councillor

A note from the Councillor

Hello residents of Ward 13

July is here and music is in the air. I love the sound and excitement of the summer music festivals that make our downtown come alive. From Sunfest, to Rock the Park, to the Home County Music and Art Festival, there’s something for every musical taste. And when you add in the South Asian Cultural Festival at the Covent Garden Market, and Pride London Fest, you’ve got a fantastic month of fun waiting for you.

Hope to see you there!”

Town Hall

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to the town hall. Our discussion sparked productive discussions on crucial topics, including hub and supportive housing progress for the whole community system response, green bins, and municipal bylaw enforcement.

Health and Homelessness Summit: Whole of Community System Response Plan
Encampment Strategy: Service Depots

Service depots have been implemented as part of the initial phase of the encampment strategy in response to rapidly deteriorating conditions on the ground. These mobile service depots aim to improve community safety in the neighborhood and provide essential resources to individuals experiencing homelessness. They offer portable toilets, sanitation facilities, drinking water, food, social support, fire prevention, and garbage collection.
It is crucial to understand that these service depots are mobile in nature and operate in the area for approximately 90 minutes each day before being packed up and relocated. The only permanent fixture at the site is a daily serviced port-o-potty. The allocated funding for these depots is expected to sustain the services for a period ranging from 30 to 90 days.
The placement of these service depots is primarily determined based on the existing encampments in the area. This approach is a direct response to the feedback received from outreach workers, neighbours, and individuals experiencing homelessness in the area. The aim is to address the concerns of all parties involved while simultaneously working on our implementation of the whole-of-community response system. The absence of these services could potentially exacerbate the situation for everyone affected.
Our ultimate goal is to significantly reduce homelessness in London and foster a community where safe housing and necessary support are accessible
The City of London’s 2023-2027 Strategic Plan
